Guangxi China

Guangxi China

Guangxi Zhuang Anutonomous Region or known in its short name as "Guangxi" is apart of the People's Republic of China. The name "Guang" means expanse, and was derived from the Western Jin Dynasty. Guangxi is fairly populated with just over 52 million inhabitants estimated for 2007. There are several nationalities within Guangxi but the major ones are Han at 62% of the population and ZXhuang at 32%.

Located in the southern region of China, Guangxi borders many provinces such as Hunan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Guangdong. The "xi" in Guangxi means western while the "dong" Guangdong means eastern. The terrain of Guangxi is very mountainous. Many mountain regions are located around Guangxi including the Nanling Mountains and Yuecheng (which has the highest peak at 2141 meters) to the Northeast. The Duyao Moutains and Fenghuang are just above the northern border.

Guangxi ranks seventeenth in China in nominal GDP at just over 332 billion yuan which is the equivalent to US$41.19 billion. The province contains more manganese, indium, and tin deposits than any other in China. Guangxi has many important crops including wheat, maize, rice, sweet potatoes which grow in very large quantities. Tobacco, peanuts, kenaf, and sugar cane is a few of the provinces major cash crops. There are only a few Universities; however, there is quite a variety of the subjects they focus on. Universities for Medical, Electronic Technology, General students are available for all residents.

As stated before Guangxi has a very high amount of people in the Zhuang nationality. Just over 14 million Zhuang's live throughout the province which is over 90% of the entire population of Zhuang's in China itself. The Zhuang people formed over 5000 years ago in central China and have lived in the area of Guangxi since then. They have their own language and system of numbers/letters they use.

If visited Guangxi the major attraction is the town of Guilin famed across the world as its amazing view of the Lijuiant River. South of the city Guilin is the town of Yangshuo which has became a popular visit for backpackers and anyone seeking hiking trails. In the northern regions of Guangxi there are many Longmen rice terraces, which are supposedly the steepest throughout the world.
